Abstract

This research was carried out to analyse 11 semi-structured interviews that were conducted in 2018 by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) to understand the users of the Kingmere MCZs views on the management changes which took place in 2016. The interview transcripts were analysed using a thematic coding approach which was developed through literature and information gained from Kingmere MCZ websites. The research focused on how the users of Kingmere MCZ view the management changes, the attributes, and values they hold towards the site and lastly their views on the CVM approach.
The results show that most users viewed the management changes negatively, with many mentioning the ongoing aggregate dredging on the site. The users saw value in the black bream and the general marine life within the site and allocated recreational and economic value to them.
The interview participants stated mainly positive sentiments towards the CVM experience, with many stating that it helped them to understand the views of others, as well as the general importance conservation has within the community. Through the analysis of the transcripts, conservation messages were developed to help further educate and inform users and the surrounding communities about the importance of protecting and conserving Kingmere MCZ.
